Dr. John A. Mathis

	Dr. John A. Mathis, age 96, of Venice, Fla., formerly of Pinckneyville, passed away Tuesday morning, August 13, 2002 at the Rosewood Care Center in Swansea, Ill.
	Dr. Mathis was born May 23, 1906 in Mounds City, Ill., the son of Archibald Mason and Katherine Anastasia (OSullivan) Mathis.   Dr. Mathis graduated from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in 1929.  He then came to Pinckneyville in 1932 where he was employed as a medical doctor at the Pinckneyville Community Hospital and was a retired Staff Member in 1976.  He served as a Lt. Commander in the U.S. Navy as a test pilot during WW II.  He was a member of the Epiphany Cathedral in Venice, Fla., formerly a member of St. Bruno Catholic Church in Pinckneyville and a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus.  He was also a member of the AMA, Illinois State Medical society, American College of Chest Physicians, Perry County Medical Society and the Missouri Athletic Club.
	Dr. Mathis was united in marriage to Elizabeth Hunter on July 20, 1977 in Sarasota, Fla and she survives.  He is also survived by four sons, Jack Mathis of Mobile, Ala., Dr. Jim S. Mathis and wife Sandra of Ironton, Mo., Patrick B. Mathis and wife Rosanne of Belleville and Dr. Timothy A. Mathis and wife Connie of Pinckneyville; two daughters, Shirley Wright and husband Travis of Detroit, Tex. and Theresa Ann Eversgerd and husband Mark of Telford, Tenn.; 17 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.  Dr. Mathis was preceded in death by his parents.
	Funeral services were held Saturday, August 17 at 10 a.m. at St. Bruno Catholic Church in Pinckneyville with Father John Venegoni officiating.  Interment was in the St. Bruno Catholic Cemetery, Pinckneyville.
	Friends called at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville on Friday evening from 5 until 8 p.m. and again on Saturday morning from 8 until 9:30 a.m.
	The Rosary was said Friday evening at 7:30 p.m.
	Memorials may be made to the Pinckneyville Community Hospital District or the Barnes-Jewish Hospital Foundation Memory and Aging Project.
